چکیده

We present a model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the extended solar corona that contains the effects of collisionless dissipation and anisotropic particle heating. Recent observations have shown that preferential heating and acceleration of positive ions occur in the first few solar radii of the high-speed solar wind. Measurements made by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer aboard SOHO have revived interest in the idea that ions are energized by the dissipation of ion cyclotron resonant waves, but such highfrequency (i.e., small-wavelength) fluctuations have not been observed. A turbulent cascade is one possible way of generating small-scale fluctuations from a preexisting population of low-frequency MHD waves. We model this cascade as a combination of advection and diffusion in wavenumber space. The dominant spectral transfer occurs in the direction perpendicular to the background magnetic field. As expected from earlier models, this leads to a highly anisotropic fluctuation spectrum with a rapidly decaying tail in the parallel wavenumber direction. The wave power that decays to high enough frequencies to become ion cyclotron resonant depends on the relative strengths of advection and diffusion in the cascade. For the most realistic values of these parameters, however, there is insufficient power to heat protons and heavy ions. The dominant oblique fluctuations (with dispersion properties of kinetic Alfvén waves) undergo Landau damping, which implies strong parallel electron heating. We discuss the probable nonlinear evolution of the electron velocity distributions into parallel beams and discrete phase-space holes (similar to those seen in the terrestrial magnetosphere), which can possibly heat protons via stochastic interactions. The Heating of Test Particles in Numerical Simulations of Alfvénic Turbulence

We study the heating of charged test particles in three-dimensional numerical simulations of weakly compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence (“Alfvénic turbulence”); these results are relevant to particle heating and acceleration in the solar wind, solar flares, accretion disks onto black holes, and other astrophysics and heliospheric environments. The physics of particle heating depen...

On ion-cyclotron-resonance heating of the corona and solar wind

This paper concisely summarizes and critically reviews recent work by the authors on models of the heating of the solar corona by resonance of ions with high-frequency waves (up to the proton cyclotron frequency). The quasilinear theory of pitch angle diffusion is presented in connection with relevant solar wind proton observations. Hybrid fluid-kinetic model equations, which include wave-parti...

Constraining Low-frequency Alfvénic Turbulence in the Solar Wind Using Density Fluctuation Measurements

One proposed mechanism for heating the solar wind, from close to the sun to beyond ∼ 10 AU, invokes lowfrequency, oblique, Alfvén-wave turbulence. Because small-scale oblique Alfvén waves (kinetic Alfvén waves) are compressive, the measured density fluctuations in the solar wind place an upper limit on the amplitude of kinetic Alfvén waves and hence an upper limit on the rate at which the solar...

Turbulence in the Solar Corona

The solar corona has been revealed in the past decade to be a highly dynamic nonequilibrium plasma environment. Both the loop-filled coronal base and the extended acceleration region of the solar wind appear to be strongly turbulent, but direct observational evidence for a cascade of fluctuation energy from large to small scales is lacking. In this paper I will review the observations of waveli...

Coronal heating distribution due to low-frequency wave-driven turbulence

The heating of the lower solar corona is examined using numerical simulations and theoretical models of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in open magnetic regions. A turbulent energy cascade to small length scales perpendicular to the mean magnetic field can be sustained by driving with low-frequency Alfvén waves reflected from mean density and magnetic field gradients. This mechanism deposits ene...
